Noam Chomsky’s health has significantly declined after a medical event, leaving him unable to communicate, according to his former assistant.

The 95-year-old renowned linguist has not been seen in public since June of last year, and his absence from the broader debate surrounding the war in Gaza has been widely noted.

Chomsky, a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause who has often criticized the actions of the Israeli state, has been noticeably absent from demonstrations and discussions on the issue over the past year.

A post shared by Media Lens revealed that the MIT professor is unlikely to return to the public eye due to his deteriorating health.

The post quoted Professor Chomsky’s former assistant Bev Stohl, who initially shared the news on a Reddit forum, explaining why the typically responsive academic “hasn’t been returning emails or participating in interviews.”

Stohl, who served as Chomsky’s office manager at MIT for 24 years until her retirement in 2017, wrote on February 5: “I’m in contact with a close family member, and we know the basics, and hope to learn more in the near future.

“In a nutshell, Noam is 95 years old and suffered a medical event in June. As many have noticed, he has not been writing, corresponding, or giving interviews, as his health situation has demanded the majority of his time and energy.

“He is still with us, watching the news (though he doesn’t look happy about what he’s watching).”

Stohl also shared additional details about Chomsky’s condition, noting that he is no longer mobile or able to walk.
