David Sanborn boasts an impressive musical career spanning six decades, characterized by 25 albums, six Grammy Awards, and numerous Gold and Platinum accolades. Renowned for his versatility, Sanborn has left an indelible mark on the music scene, seamlessly blending instrumental pop, R&B, and traditional jazz genres.
Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Sanborn’s journey with the saxophone began as part of his treatment for polio at the tender age of three. By 14, he was already performing alongside blues legends like Albert King and Little Milton. His formal music education took him to Northwestern University and later the University of Iowa, where he honed his craft under the tutelage of saxophonist JR Monterose.
Venturing to California on a friend’s recommendation, Sanborn embarked on a remarkable journey, joining the Butterfield Blues Band and even gracing the stage at Woodstock with Paul Butterfield. His career soared as he toured with icons like Stevie Wonder, recorded with The Rolling Stones, and collaborated with David Bowie, contributing his iconic saxophone solo to “Young Americans.” Concurrently, Sanborn cultivated his partnership with jazz luminary Gil Evans while furthering his solo endeavors in New York City, collaborating with the likes of Paul Simon and James Taylor.
Sanborn’s debut solo album, “Taking Off,” released in 1975, marked the beginning of a legendary solo career. The subsequent release of “Hideaway” in 1979 propelled him to greater heights, with hits like “Seduction” featured in the movie “American Gigolo.” Collaborating with bassist Marcus Miller on “Voyeur” in 1981 earned Sanborn his first Grammy Award for Best R&B Instrumental Performance.
Throughout his career, Sanborn has collaborated with a plethora of esteemed artists, including Luther Vandross, Eric Clapton, and Jack DeJohnette, among others. Beyond music, he has ventured into television, hosting the acclaimed show “Night Music” from 1988 to 1990, and later the syndicated radio program “The Jazz Show with David Sanborn.”
