Jennifer Wolf Conde: Remembering a Pioneering Journalist and Scholar

The passing of Jennifer Wolf Conde, a distinguished investigative journalist and anchor reporter who left an indelible mark on Puerto Rican news programs in the 1980s and 1990s, has been confirmed by her former colleague, Daisy Sánchez.

Expressing sorrow at the loss, Sánchez shared the news on social media, saying, “Jenniffer Wolff, another colleague who is leaving us because of cancer. She rests in peace. There are many and often.”

Wolff Conde’s illustrious career in communications spanned over 14 years, during which she contributed significantly to news programs on prominent television channels like Wapa Televisión, Telemundo, and Teleonce. In 1993, she co-hosted the innovative program “Estudio 2” alongside reporter and producer Myraida Chaves Carbia, gaining recognition for her series of investigative reports.

Apart from her impactful journalism career, Wolff Conde held a Ph.D. in History from the University of Puerto Rico and earned dual bachelor’s degrees in History and Latin American Studies from Duke University. Her expertise as a historian focused on the early modern Hispanic Caribbean, leading her to publish academic works on various historical topics.

In 2020, she successfully defended her doctoral thesis, titled “Atlantic Island: Puerto Rico 1580-1636. Contraband trade and the formation of the Atlantic space in the peripheral Caribbean,” receiving an “outstanding” rating with a recommendation for publication.

Beyond her journalistic endeavors, Wolff Conde served as the director of the Madrid Bureau of the Center for a New Economy (CNE) and held key roles, including Senior Program Director and Director of Programs and Communications for the San Juan office.

Following the announcement of her passing, colleagues from the journalism profession expressed their condolences on social media. Yolanda Vélez Arcelay, presenter of Rayos X, described her as a “valuable, brilliant, and very, very brave woman.” Celimar Adames, female anchor of Las Noticias de Teleonce, shared her surprise at the news, paying tribute to “Teleonce’s first anchor” and remembering her as a “first-rate professional.”
