Tragic Outcome in Friendsville Standoff: One Fatality, One Injured
A somber incident unfolded in Friendsville on Friday night, resulting in one man’s death and another sustaining injuries during a standoff, as reported by the Blount County Sheriff’s Office.
Around 8:15 p.m., deputies rushed to a residence on Quarry Hollow Road following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, Kyle Spitze and another resident were found outside. Spitze, nursing an ear injury, informed deputies that he and Jeffrey Scott West, 68, had been involved in a dispute inside the home.
According to Spitze, West brandished a gun and fired a shot, grazing Spitze’s ear. Both witnesses fled the house to dial 911, and by the time deputies arrived, West had fled through the back door.
Spitze was promptly taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment.
In response to the incident, the Blount County Sheriff’s Office deployed Crisis Negotiations and SWAT teams, initiating negotiations with West. Authorities also utilized diversionary devices in an attempt to secure his surrender.
Tragically, around 11 p.m., a K-9 officer discovered West lifeless inside the residence from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
No officers or deputies sustained injuries during the operation. Sheriff Berrong expressed gratitude to the Maryville Police Department, Tennessee Highway Patrol Air Aviation Unit, AMR Ambulance Service, and Friendsville Volunteer Fire Department for their collaboration and support during this unfortunate event.
