Elizabeth’s life unfolded with unique challenges from an early age. Born in England, at just 6 months old, she contracted polio, also known as ‘infantile paralysis.’ Initially facing complete loss of movement, Elizabeth defied the odds when a degree of movement returned, albeit with severe consequences. Her legs were almost entirely paralyzed, and her trunk muscles were significantly affected, leaving her with a weak shoulder, arm, and a paralyzed hand. Despite numerous remedies and surgeries, Elizabeth relied on a wheelchair for mobility.

🏡 Adapting for Independence: Elizabeth Hastings Australia

Returning home at the age of 2, Elizabeth’s parents, recognizing her growing needs, built a bedroom and bathroom downstairs. In a remarkable show of determination, her father crafted a ‘gadabout’—a unique mobility aid with a front wheel and two at the back, steered by a tiller. This invention empowered Elizabeth to navigate herself to the local kindergarten by the age of 4, fostering a sense of independence that was essential to her.

The Power of Accessibility: Elizabeth Hastings Australia

This year’s theme for the International Day of People with Disabilities is ACCESSABILITY, a concept intertwined with independence. Elizabeth’s homemade gadabout not only made the kindergarten accessible but also symbolized her journey towards self-reliance, demonstrating the impact of accessible environments in shaping the lives of individuals with disabilities.

🎉 A Bright and Sociable Spirit: Elizabeth Hastings Australia

Despite the challenges, Elizabeth’s spirit remained resilient. A sociable and bright child, she embarked on an adventurous journey to Australia, celebrating her 8th birthday on the ship. Known for her creativity, she even won a fancy dress competition as a jack-in-the-box, cleverly utilizing her wheelchair for hanging props.
